BOCA RATON, Fla., May 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- To coincide with National Nurses Week and Mother's Day, Cross Country Healthcare, Inc. (NASDAQ: CCRN) surveyed over 4,800 Nursing and Allied healthcare professionals. The results indicate that the majority of respondents who choose travel and temporary contract assignments are working mothers. A better work-life balance and more time to spend with their children were cited as top reasons for choosing these assignments. Additionally, nearly a quarter of those who travel said they bring their children with them to their assignment locations. Some additional survey highlights include:

  • 64% of respondents are mothers
  • 85% of those mothers are currently working
  • 34% of those surveyed work temporary or local contract assignments
    • 26% work per diem and contract positions
    • 8% work travel assignments

Vickie Anenberg, President of Cross Country Healthcare's Nurse and Allied Staffing Division, adds, "All professionals, both men and women, are striving for that perfect work-life balance. As a working mother of two myself, I know firsthand how important it is to be challenged professionally, while also having quality time to spend with my family. I'm glad we can offer that combination to all working professionals, especially mothers, who make up such a large part of our workforce."

Many of the surveyed nurses shared positive experiences they had bringing their children with them on travel assignments. Lydia B, MHA, MSN, RN PCCN said, "My kids are grown now. However, when they were younger, I did travel nursing with them and they had a blast. The adventure of going different places helped them to grow into wonderful young men and adapt to life's challenges." In addition, nursing and allied working mothers are also choosing per diem shifts to work around important family life events.

Ms. Anenberg, who has been featured in Working Mother magazine and appeared as a keynote speaker at one of their featured conferences, added, "We are focused on having our clinicians get the most out of their career and a big part of that is always going to be making sure they have opportunities that allow for a great life outside of work, as well."
